My SheltiesI've worked four Shelties in herding. Brandy, a tri-color, bitch and Storm, her tri-factored sable and white son. Both dogs worked to the advanced level. The third Sheltie is Dreamer, a sable and white bitch who turned out to have more lapdog than sheepdog in her. Finally, Star has begun her herding career. Here are pictures of Brandy and Storm working sheep:
Just a quick word about the titles. Brandy completed her HX (herding excellent) title on 1/18/98 (becoming the 13th Sheltie to do so) and was working on her Herding Champion title (she earned 3 points on 1/19/98) before she was diagnosed with Cushing's Disease in April, 2001. The other titles are CD (obedience, "Companion Dog"), CGC (Canine Good Citizen), TDI (she's a registered Therapy Dog), OTD-s,c (ASCA's Open Trial Dog on both sheep and cattle with one leg toward the advanced title in each of these categories), STD-d (ASCA's Started Trial Dog, Ducks with one leg toward her Open title) and HRD-IIIs (AHBA's Herding Ranch Dog level 3 on sheep -- this is an advanced title). Brandy passed away from old age (she was nearly 15) on 7/16/04. Storm completed his HXAs (Herding Excellent, "A" Course, sheep) on 4/30/2000. He also has his STD-s (Started Trial Dog, sheep and one leg toward an STD on cattle), HTD-IIs (AHBA's Herding Trial Dog level 2 on sheep, an Intermediate/Open level title) and HRD-IIs (AHBA's Herding Ranch Dog level 2 on sheep, an Intermediate/Open level title). Storm has lived up to expectations since his mother is a multiple-HIT dog and his father is WTCH Stewart's Easy Storm, UD, HX, HTD-III, PC ("Easy") who also has multiple HITs to go along with his HX and Working Trial Championship! Storm becomes the 18th Sheltie to earn an HX. Storm passed away on 3/26/04 from lung cancer at the age of 12. My third Sheltie, Dreamer, was born on October 12, 2001. On February 7 & 8 of 2002 she was exposed to sheep at the instinct test level. She was very responsive. She has since earned her HC (Herding Capability Tested) test title from the AHBA. Due, however, to a lack of desire to work, she has been retired to the status of lap warmer. Star, shown above at age six weeks is continuing her training. She completed her Pre-trial Tested (PT) title on 8/12/2006 and is now training for trial level work. Back to TopHot List
