112 people have contracted the virus this year. Thirty of them are from Orange County. Health officials stressed that everyone needs to avoid mosquito bites."We don’t know why the activity in Southern California is so high this year," said Deanne Thompson, spokeswoman for the county Health Care Agency. "Vector control suggests it may be due to the number of neglected swimming pools."
Most people with the virus do not experience symptoms.
Up to 20 percent of those who are infected may have a fever, headache, body aches, nausea, fatigue and possibly swollen lymph glands or a skin rash. Anyone with serious symptoms, including severe headaches, neck stiffness, confusion, vision loss or muscle weakness, should see a doctor immediately.
Last month, Orange County officials reported that an 80-year-old man and 49-year-old woman were hospitalized for West Nile Virus. They have both recovered, Thompson said.
