Snow Birds East

Difficulty: Medium

It's Christmas and you have the following week off. Tired of the cold and itching to use your new private pilot's license you call some friends in Bridgeport who also have the week off. You and your spouse and your friends all decide to fly to Key West for the week. You've called the flight school and they have a Cessna 182RG available for use during that week. After careful consideration, and taking human nature into consideration, the flights have all been scheduled to be between an hour and two hours in duration. So, the day after Christmas, bright and early, you are off to the airport. These flights are all scheduled as VFR flights using VOR navigation. Because you are flying VFR, special consideration has been made to avoid any Enhanced Class B airspace. All charts are included in the zip file.

Corporate Tour

Charts

Difficulty: Hard

The regular corporate pilot and aircraft are unavailable, but a government requirement has forced the company to send an inspector to each of the corporate facilities in the Western United States. You've been hired to fly him around in your Cessna 182RG. You'll be flying IFR in wind, rain and snow. It should be a lot of flying time, and your first opportunity to get paid for flying! All the charts are in a separate zip file and can be downloaded by clicking on the charts link.

Student Pilot Cross Country

Difficulty: Easy

Well, it's time for your long cross country flight. According to the Federal Aviation Regulations, Part 61, you will need one solo cross-country flight of at least 150 NM total distance, with full-stop landings at a minimum of three points, and with one segment of the flight consisting of a straight-line distance of at least 50 NM between takeoff and landing. This flight will meet that requirement. This flight is 184.6 miles, and the distance between the two most distant points is 79 miles. In fact, the next longest segment is 52.7 miles! Total flying time is about 2.5 hours.

Grand Tetons

Difficulty: Medium

Let's practice our pilotage! On this flight we'll fly from West Yellowstone airport to Jackson Hole, WY. We'll fly over Yellowstone National Park and then down past Grand Teton National Park. This flight is rated Medium because of the altitude (9,000 feet), not because of anything tricky. The flight takes about 35 minutes. Because this flight uses pilotage, there is no .PLN file -- you're on your own.

Interlaken

Difficulty: Medium

A fun flight through some of the most beautiful Swiss countryside. I well recall driving through the area around Interlaken and find breathtaking view after breathtaking view. This flight goes from Bern (when you're there, visit the bears in the center of town, a marvelous way to see them) to the Buoches airport.

$150 Hamburger

Difficulty: Easy

Southern California pilots will frequently fly to Santa Catalina Island for lunch. Not only is this a pretty flight, but it allows the pilot to land at a difficult airport. When the wind is blowing from the southwest it tends to blow over the lip of the rim on approach. This can lead to sudden contact with the island somewhat below the level of the airport! This collection of flights includes four different starting points, all arriving at Catalina. The starting points are John Wayne and Fullerton in orange County, McClellan-Palomar in north San Diego County, and Santa Monica in Los Angeles County.
